Clean Vacationing On The Great Outdoors

By James J Dixon

Clean vacationing is when you collect all your garbage when outdoors and put it in a garbage can, or collect it in bags and bring it all back home, for collection by the garbage collection service at home. This way, you are helping to keep our campsites, beaches and other tourist spots, clean and pristine.

By doing your bit to keep the environment clean, you are helping to keep our forests, rivers, lakes and beaches clean of garbage, including broken bottles and fish hooks that may cause severe injuries.

The worst surprise, is when you arrive to a campsite, it is covered with garbage from the previous occupiers and you have to spend a few hours cleaning up the mess they left behind. This is the reason, you want to review your options and leave a good impression when you are clean vacationing.

Plastic Food Packaging All Over The Campsite

Admit it. When the sun is out and you are at your favorite campsite or cottage on the lake, the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of time cooking a meal. Often, when vacationing, the lure to purchase instant foods is strong.

Unfortunately, these convenience foods often come over packaged usually including some type of plastic. As we can see when we come across trash in the wilderness, the plastics tend to linger the longest - other than maybe glass and metal.

Cleaning Up As You Go

Nothing ruins the feel of a pristine, natural area more than a bunch of garbage. Numerous studies prove that tourists return to an area primarily for its cleanliness and greenery. In this era where the economy has come to rely more on tourism, cleaning up is truly a benefit for the community.

We soon realized that walking by these messes and complaining over such disrespect, we were behaving not much better than the polluters who left it. Now when we hike we pack a supply of plastic bags (grocery bags work well) to clean up as we go. Often we earn up to $10 in returnable bottles and cans in the process.

Diving For Garbage Below THe Water Surface

When you take a bit of time to clean up some trash not only do you have a better trail or beach to come back to, you have helped to make it safer and nicer for the next user. This simple measure just might influence others to keep it clean, as well.

When on the water with the canoe, we also clean as we go by diving for garbage below the surface using a mask and snorkel. It is amazing the finds we have from these excursions under water.

One of the first times we did this, we found an expensive diving mask in about 30 feet of water – enough incentive to continue this practice! We have found antique bottles, jewelry, fishing lures and reels.

Cleaning Up The Beach Of Broken Glass And Fish Hooks

It feels very good to clear up a beach of shards of broken glass hiding just below the surface before an unwary swimmer splashes into it. It does not, however, feel as good to find a large fish hook by imbedding it in the bottom of your foot.

Take heart in knowing you have done a good thing as your expletive echoes off the far mountainside. Imagine an innocent child stepping on that hook instead of you and decide if it is worth taking the time.

Helping to keep a clean environment, is not only keeping the beaches, campsites and other tourist areas in pristine condition, it is also helps prevent accidents that may cause awful injuries and long periods in hospital.

Fires Started By Cigarettes

Many fires have been started by people throwing a lighted cigarette from a passing car. Fires have also been started in homes when a smoker falls asleep with a lighted cigarette. It may be better to use the ashtray provided in most cars and smokers homes, or better still take up one of the stop smoking plans to help the health of you and your family, and cut out the possibility of starting fires altogether.

After arriving back home from your trip outdoors, you can place your garbage from your vacation in your garbage bins. If you have a recycling collection service in your area, then you can separate your garbage according to the collection service requirements, by placing your glass and plastic bottles and other recyclables in your recycling bin.

By taking action to clean your garbage before you leave your outdoors vacation spot, you are keeping the environment clean and making your contribution to a pristine environment when clean vacationing.

Little Known Recycling Facts.....

How do I recycle my garbage?
The first step you need to take is to contact your local waste management facility and find out what types of recyclables they take each week. The next step is to secure the appropriate bins that will house each of the different types of recycling materials.

Some bins are for inside your home and some are for outside. Once you have the correct storage containers it is time to sort your trash. Plastics, papers, glass, aluminum and yard trimmings will each go into separate bins and placed out on your curb for pick-up on the appropriate day.
