Deforestation For Development
By Genevieve Thomson
Development has been a process and the means to provide
more and more comfort and prosperity to human beings.
Development has, at the same time, spelt doom to most
of the forests around the globe and particularly to
the rain forest.
Massive scale deforestation is taking place for a number
of reasons, which are mainly tied to the burgeoning
population explosion of the past few decades. Owing
to the rapid increase in the number of mouths that need
to be fed, the demand for land increased exponentially
for cultivation, housing and income generation.

Deforestation To Generate Food
Unless some drastic measures are put into motion, this
path will most certainly lead to the destruction of
life on earth.
One of the most important reasons for deforestation
is the generation of food. The sudden increase in the
global population has demanded that enough food be generated,
so forests were depleted to create land for agriculture.
Shifting Land Cultivation In Asian And African Countries
The communities in Asian and African countries practice
shifting land cultivation, where land for agriculture
is created with the help of forest fires, after which
a new patch of forest is destroyed for the same purpose.
African and American cattle ranching have both become
another major reason for the destruction of forests.
In some cases, massive tree planting schemes are undertaken.
However, these are not able to recreate the same ecosystem
that once existed, therefore the effort is rather redundant.
Need For Housing Is Rising Rapidly
One of the major reasons for deforestation is housing.
Real estate is in high demand, not only as a home but
also as an investment. While once upon a time a joint
family was considered the norm, today the shift is more
on the nuclear family.
As a result, the need for real estate is rising rapidly,
further motivating people to go on a massive buying
spree, which in turn results in the demand for more
land, which means that more forests could be destroyed.
Unfortunately, though in most countries there are forest
friendly rules. These are mostly ignored in order to
benefit a handful of locals. The time has come when
everybody should act as a global community and work
together to save our planet.
Deforestation Is Due To The Growing Demands Of The
Growing Population
The massive deforestation that is taking place all
over the world is obviously due to the demands of the
growing populace on the planet. Until a decade or so
ago, progress meant comfort, pleasure and safety.
Today, it is synonymous with destruction and mismanagement
of natural resources. Strong action is called for today,
as only stringent measures will help the environment
to regain its strength and beauty. Promote forest conservation
and regeneration of our rain forests. The need for action
is urgent and imperative.

Little Known Ecosystem Facts.....
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is simple. It is all the flora
and fauna in an area working together. It may be the squirrel
collecting nuts from the tree in a woodland ecosystem. It may
be the fish taking refuge in a coral reef in a marine ecosystem.
The point is that there are thousands and thousands
of ecosystems all around us on a daily basis. In fact
we each interact with each other in an ecosystem every
time we come into contact with the outside world. You
are interacting with an ecosystem when you walk through
the park or go swimming in a nearby lake.
