Ecosystem Services Help Maintain The Environment

By Genevieve Thomson

You may not realize it, but many of the purification systems and production of the foods that you eat are brought about by different ecosystems.

Any natural ecosystem is responsible for many of the processes that bring about the agricultural growth of foods that we eat and the water that we drink. The process that this is done through is called "ecosystem services" because of the benefits they provide for us.

Each ecosystem provides unique services to the environments in their area. Without a properly functioning ecosystem, some environmental processes necessary for the continuation of plant and animal life in each ecosystem would be impossible.

Ecosystem Services Include Clean Water And Air

Without the services that an ecosystem provides, it would be nearly impossible for a life cycle to function. If ecosystems are so necessary, then what are some ecosystem services that ecosystems provide? These services are what the ecosystem does in order to give humans resources, such as clean water and air, habits for fish, and other such services.

An ecosystem can aide in the process for moderation of weather, pollinate vegetation and crops, fertilize soil, protect coasts from erosion, help stabilize climates, detoxify waste, move nutrients, scatter seeds from one place to another, and many more. As you can see, these services that each ecosystem provides for the world are vital to the survival of plants and animals everywhere, and consequently, humans as well.

Consequences For Disruption To An Ecosystem

What can happen if ecosystem services are disrupted? If ecosystems, such as ocean ecosystems, marine ecosystems, or a desert ecosystem are disrupted, then life as we know it would completely change.

There are many different ways in which humans contribute to the destruction of the ecosystems. Urban sprawl is a huge contributor, because it upsets the natural balance of that area. Some other factors include: pesticide and toxic chemical wastelands, over harvesting of sea life in freshwater ecosystems and ocean ecosystems, deforestation, bringing in species not native to an area, and pollution.

Extremely Important To Save The Different Ecosystems

All of these factors can seriously endanger the natural order of an ecosystem. You might be wondering if it is worth it to try and save the different ecosystems. It is actually extremely important. Many of the drugs that are in use today begin with natural wild plants. Nearly 80% of all drugs in use have some herbal ingredient.

Most of the world’s pollination is done through the actions of birds, bees and other insects. Without such insects, plants would die out very quickly because it would be impossible for mankind to artificially pollinate all the plants.

Important To Keep Natural Ecosystems Running

For these reasons, and many more, it is extremely important for humans to try and keep natural ecosystems running as smoothly as possible. There are many different ways of doing this, and each idea has its good points.

So that is why ecosystem services are so important. If all the ecosystems died, the world would be a nasty place, and mankind would not survive for long. This is a very important factor to remember when we are talking about ecosystem management, as it is important not only for the ecosystem itself, but for the world.

This is why it is so important to keep these natural ecosystem environments places going strong.

Little Known Ecosystem Facts.....

How are ecosystems interconnected?
For the most part ecosystems are interconnected through each other. It may be the snowshoe hare that goes from an arctic landscape to the forest floor. Each ecosystem on the planet is also touched by mankind. You also have to factor in that within a bigger ecosystem there will be smaller ecosystems living and functioning on a daily basis.

It is a hard concept to wrap your mind around that there are hundreds of different ecosystems in the world and we have a part interconnecting them all through us.
