Empty Bottles With Your Recyclables
By James J Dixon
Empty bottles are one of the many recyclables you can
leave for collection by a recycling collection service
in your area or take the empty bottles to a return center
nearby. Depending on the type of recycling collection
services in your area, it may be more convenient to
leave your empty bottles with your recyclables for collection,
on the curb.
You can find out if there are active recycling collection
companies in your area and find out about their collection
days. You may leave your bottles, paper products and
other recyclables on the curb for the recycling companies
to collect. Many of the recycling companies are private
companies, while other recycling collection services
are run by the local garbage collection service.
Recycling Empty Bottles In New York
When I moved to New York state from Pennsylvania, I
had to adjust to dealing with my empty bottles in a
different way. Though I have always been concerned about
the environment, I never really thought about a lot
of the things that I was doing.
Most of the empty bottles in my home were just thrown
away. Now that I live in New York, this is something
that I no longer do. I guess you can say that money
is a motivator, because now I get five cents back on
every bottle I return.
Get Refund When Return Bottle For Recycling
New York can afford to pay five cents for empty bottles
because you get charged for it when you buy the bottle.
If you look closely at your receipt you will see that
you are charged five cents extra for every bottle that
you have purchased no matter what it contains.
When you return these empty bottles to a return center,
you will be refunded this five cents. You have the choice
of returning the empty bottles, or throwing them away
and leaving that money with the state. As a result,
many people, at least in my community, return their
bottles on a regular basis.
Return Centers In Grocery Stores
There is only one thing that bothers me about the empty
bottles. I don’t have a lot of space, so it is hard
for me to store them. This isn’t the worst problem though.
For the most part, I can live with the inconvenience.
What bothers me is that some of the return centers smell
so bad I can barely stand to be inside them.
Many times these return centers are in grocery stores,
and they are kept very nice. However, there was one
grocery store near me that had a return center for empty
bottles. My guess would be that many people do not clean
up their bottles before they returned them, and the
smell I was smelling was a result of the liquids from
these empty bottles going through the machine and landing
on the floor.
Bad Smell Of Stale Beer
When I would go into this particular grocery store,
I would smell this horrible stale beer smell. I knew
the smell came from the empty bottles, but it did not
make me want to shop at that particular grocery store.
I have a feeling that I may not have been the only one
who is turned off because that store has recently gone
out of business.
I think that the act of returning empty bottles is
great whether you get money for it or not, but I think
the return centers in grocery stores should be kept
as clean as possible. No one should have to smell that
when going to buy groceries.
Recycling Services Collect Recyclable Products
Taking your empty bottle to a return center is one
way to send your bottle for recycling. There are recycling
companies that collect plastic and glass bottles, paper
products and other household recyclables. You can find
out about the recycling companies in your area and discover
their collection days. Some recycling services are run
by the local county or municipal councils and collect
household recyclables on the day they collect normal
household garbage.
Once you know the type of recycling services in your
area, then you can do your bit to cut down the mountains
of recyclables filling our landfills and leave out all
your recyclables on the curb to be collected by recycling
services in your area.
Green Waste To Create Nutrients For Gardens
Some recycling services collect green waste, like grass
clipping from your lawn, leaves and small branches from
your trees and other green matter from your garden.
A lot of this green waste can be placed in a compost
bin to create nutrients for your garden, but if you
do not have a compost bin or you have more green waste
than you need for your compost bin, then leave it on
the curb for the green waste recycling company.
As you can see, there are many ways you can help reduce,
reuse and recycle your household waste, including empty
bottles.

Little Known Recycling Facts.....
How do I recycle my garbage?
The first step you need to take
is to contact your local waste management facility
and find out what types of recyclables they take
each week. The next step is to secure the
appropriate bins that will house each of the
different types of recycling materials.
Some bins are for inside your home and some are for
outside. Once you have the correct storage containers
it is time to sort your trash. Plastics, papers, glass,
aluminum and yard trimmings will each go into separate
bins and will be placed out on your curb for pick-up
on the appropriate day.
