Energy Efficient Refrigerator Helps To Reduce Your
Power Costs
By Gerard J Howson
An energy efficient refrigerator consumes more power
in most households, than almost any other home appliance.
Your washing machine and dryer can take plenty of power
but it is your refrigerator that you have to be more
concerned about, when you see your energy bill.
There are some simple steps you can take to improve
the efficiency and operation of your energy efficient
refrigerator. For example, many people may not realise
the temperature in the fridge can be adjusted. The setting
should be adjusted for the different seasons to reduce
energy costs.
Testing The Temperature Setting In Your Refrigerator
Now, you can check to see if the temperature settings
in your refrigerator are correct. Take a thermometer
and place it in a glass of water and refrigerate overnight.
In the morning, take it out and read it. The temperature
you need, is somewhere between 34-40 degrees Fahrenheit.
If this is not the reading on the thermometer, then
the setting in your refrigerator needs adjusting. Another
tip, make sure that the temperature is reduced in winter.
Your freezer should be between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
Manual Defrost Refrigerators Help To Reduce Energy
Costs
Most people prefer automatic defrost refrigerators
but they are not as energy efficient as manual defrost
refrigerators.
They’re just more efficient if the manual defrosting
is carefully maintained. A rule of thumb, is to defrost
your freezer. If the ice in the freezer is thicker than
a quarter of one inch, then it is less energy efficient.
Immediate action should be taken to defrost your freezer,
to help reduce your energy costs.
Frozen Food Defrosting In The Refrigerator
Every time you need to defrost food, remove it the
night before from the freezer, and place it in the refrigerator
overnight. This will give time for the fridge to cool
down. With this action, you are reducing energy consumption.
When you are to clean your refrigerator, turn off the
power source and unplug the electrical cord at the power
outlet. As you clean your refrigerator, you should vacuum
the coils behind the refrigerator at least twice a calendar
year. You could also check the seals around the door,
repair them and see if they need replacing. In some
cases the seals may become dirty with food and therefore
require some work to clean properly.
Good Airflow And An Energy Saving Switch
It is best if the fridge is not located anywhere near
the dishwasher, oven or heat vents and away from sunlight.
A refrigerator requires good air flow in order to be
as effective as possible, and therefore should not be
near anything that hinders this process.
Some refrigerators have an energy saving switch (or
anti-sweat switch). If your refrigerator has such a
device, it must be switched on during the summer months,
but not during winter time. It is important to always
read the instructions and know how to reduce your energy
costs with a new energy efficient refrigerator.

Little Known Solar Facts.....
What is the initial cost of switching over to
using alternate energy?
Switching over depends on
what exactly you are switching.
Houses that have to be retrofitted using solar
panels to generate electricity can be quite costly.
Vehicles are cheaper to retrofit but require work.
The costs can vary for anything switched over.
The best way to get an estimated idea is to seek
out a contractor or mechanic that is for using
alternate energy sources.
