Green Architecture And Sustainable Design

By Gerard J Howson

Green architecture and sustainable designs allows for the installation of systems in your home to reduce the cost of energy systems and reduce the use of energy inefficient systems when considering your home improvement options.

Using effective insulation, better energy systems, recycled materials and sustainable design will help to ensure you have an energy efficient home. Your reward, will be the reduction of your overall costs to maintain the energy in your home.

The Benefits Of Green Architecture And Sustainable Design

Green architecture and sustainable design have become buzzwords recently, but few people really understand the full importance of these concepts. The benefits of green architecture are generally known.

Everyone knows, for example, that if you use local materials that are produced in a way that is not environmentally hazardous, you can save a lot of energy and reduce pollution.

People also have some idea that if you insulate your house well, use fuel-efficient appliances, and turn off lights when one leaves the room, you can save energy. What people don't understand, is the importance of the benefits of green architecture.

One of my best friends is a green architect, and he is always telling me about his newest accomplishments. What I have realized from talking to him is that green architecture does not have one meaning.

Diversity In Green Architecture

One green architecture plan, for example, creates conventional buildings while using the latest materials in a way to try to make it more energy efficient. Another firm might completely redo the design, using earth-based materials as insulator and recycled building materials for the walls. Green architects can be radical or fairly moderate in their designs. Some of them are reformers, others are visionaries. There is plenty of room for diversity in the field.

More and more people are taking notice and starting to make their architecture green nowadays. Even some of the most mainstream design firms are taking advantage of energy saving devices such as double pane glass, new installation techniques, and energy saving light bulbs.

Be A Part Of The New Era Of Energy Efficiency

As a matter of fact, there's some indication that incandescent lights are being phased out entirely in favor of fluorescent ones that use up only a fraction of the energy. Combined with green architectural techniques that make buildings more insulated and take advantage of natural light to supplement artificial lighting, these developments may usher in a new era of energy efficiency.

Of course, green architecture alone isn't enough. We also need green urban planning. Cities need to be planned around keeping people as close together as possible and making transportation energy efficient. The typical modern urban sprawl is a thing of the past.

The next cities of tomorrow will review their options and combine green architecture, efficient public transportation, and well thought out design to create viable communities where cars are almost entirely unnecessary. It may seem like a far cry from how things are, but it is possible. We are already taking the first strides as a society.

Solar Power For Your Home

Another option to increase energy efficiency in your home and reduce your electricity costs is to use solar power to power your lights and electric appliances in your home, by arranging for the installation of a solar power system in your home.

You may notice you can get a warranty on the solar power equipment for between ten to twenty five years, depending on the manufacturer. The solar panels to trap the free sun energy, are almost maintenance free and do not generate harmful emissions.

Solar Hot Water System In Your Home

Solar hot water is one of the more popular systems used these days, where you can heat water in your home using solar power. You may start using solar hot water in your home and then once you realise the cost benefits of using solar power, then you may arrange for the installation of a solar power system in your home, to power all your electricity needs.

Just remember, once a solar power system is installed in your home, there are no ongoing solar power charges to supply electricity to your home. Using solar power, you may find you do not need to use electricity from fossil fuel burning power stations.

Using energy efficient systems and environmentally friendly products in your home are two options when considering green architecture.

Little Known Solar Facts.....

Unless you have a severe sun allergy that prohibits you from walking outside or being near a window during the day, you have felt the power of the sun. The warming rays ensure humanity's very existence. Since the beginning humans have needed the sun to grow food, provide warmth and light the way.

It may just be another star in the sky but for Earth it is what gives us life. There is more to the sun than just allowing us to spend a day outside. It can be the solution to our energy problems.

Solar power may be the future of the Earth.
