Green Choices For Valentines Day Gifts With Many Pleasant Surprises
By James J Dixon
Green choices for valentines day gifts can make for
ideal gift ideas to surprise your sweetheart. You can
think about the usually dull and predictable gift ideas,
but use alternative green choices to make environmentally
friendly gifts.
For example, rather than giving half a dozen cut roses
on Valentines Day, give a living organically grown,
house plant blooming with flowers. Your sweetheart will
be able to keep and feed the plant much longer than
a few days, when compared with withered cut flowers.
Outdoor solar lights are another popular option for
a green gift. These lights run on solar power, as they
are not reliant on the main electricity grid to light
up your backyard. The security around the outside of
your home can also be enhanced by these lights.
Here are some more green choices for Valentines Day
gifts.
Giving Live Organic Flowers As Houseplants
Conventionally grown flowers are often dangerous to
the environment and the workers involved with growing
them. An option to giving cut flowers is seeking out
locally grown live houseplants.
There are plenty of flowering varieties available,
and they are beautiful, year-round gifts, which add
vibrancy to homes and offices. One of the advantages
to purchasing plants grown close to where you live is
that you are not contributing to the resource use and
greenhouse gas emissions of air shipping, which is common
with imported flowers.
Earth Friendly Perfumes And Fragrances
Many perfume fragrances are synthetic and often made
from toxic petrochemicals derived from crude oil. There
are more earth friendly alternatives and it is easy
to make your own natural perfume too. Send Cards
Made With Recyclable Paper, Send E-mail Cards, Or Make
Your Own.
- Choose a locally made card, rather than one that
has been mass-produced and traveled a long way to
reach you.
- Choose a card with little or no glitter - these
are easier to recycle.
- Make your own card - you might get extra points
for effort.
- Go traditional and write your own love note.
- Send an e-card (save the trees!).
An Organic Wine and Spa Set Make An Ideal Gift
Picture this: Your loved one walks into the bathroom
— and it has been transformed into a spa. A lavender-scented
hot bath has been drawn. Wine and chocolates are waiting
in a tray by the tub. Moreover, you are waiting to give
a massage with natural oils. Sound good? This case has
all the organic goodies you will need — just add candles.
Only problem: You will have to clean the tub. Now, that
is love.
Fair Trade Chocolate To Help Poor Disadvantaged Farmers
Everybody loves chocolate. It tastes excellent; it makes
you feel good; and it is hard to imagine Valentine’s
Day without its sweetness. However, all is not well
in the chocolate industry.
Like coffee, chocolate is produced in some of the most
economically disadvantaged regions of the world. Cocoa
bean farmers find themselves under tremendous price
pressure from buying cartels. The result is institutionalized
poverty and an alarming reliance on abusive child labor.
It all filters down to the candy aisle at your favorite
grocery store. The solution for responsible consumers
is Fair Trade cocoa and chocolate. Fair Trade certification
guarantees that cocoa farmers receive a guaranteed “floor
price” of at least 80 U.S. cents for non-organic cocoa,
and a premium for produce meeting organic standards.
This is often well above the market price, and the
upcharge is passed to consumers. In return, the cocoa
producers warrant a variety of progressive labor and
environmental practices. It works out for everyone.
Shopping For Green Gift Ideas
When you are out shopping for green gift ideas, you
may realise green gifts are not easy to find. Not every
flower shop sells organic live uncut flowers. The same
goes for fair trade chocolate and fair trade coffee.
You may need to make a special order for these, or run
to a health food shop, place a special order and hope
you receive them before Valentines Day so you can surprise
your sweetheart.
While you are at the health food store, you may look
for a Valentine gift basket, with organic food. Alternatively,
you can make your own gift basket and buy the organic
food from the health food store.
Making Your Custom Gift Basket
As an example, if you know your sweetheart, loves coffee,
chocolate and wine, then you can place fair trade organic
chocolate, fair trade organic coffee, a bottle of organic
wine and a couple of wine glasses. Look, you can even
include a few organic snacks to round out your gift.
You may need a wicker basket to place your gifts, and
these are available in many places.
Many of these gift ideas can be bought online, so if
you do not have the time to locate your ideal green
gifts, just enter your green gift choices in your favourite
search engine, and you will find many online stores
willing to deliver, usually overnight or within a short
period of time.
These are some of the many ways you can make green
choices for valentines day gifts.

Little Known Solar Facts.....
What is the initial cost of switching over to using
alternate energy?
Switching over depends on what
exactly you are switching.
Houses that have to be retrofitted using solar panels
to generate electricity can be quite costly. Vehicles
are cheaper to retrofit but require work. The costs
can vary for anything switched over.
The best way to get an estimated idea is to seek out
a contractor or mechanic that is for using alternate
energy sources.
