Hot Water System With Energy And Water Efficient Tips

By James J Dixon

If you have an inefficient hot water system, then it may be contributing to your increasing utility bills.

Finding ways to make your hot water system much more water and energy efficient, includes reducing the amount of water you use in your home for everything from washing clothes, washing dishes and time spent in the shower.

Solar Hot Water Service

You can review your options to reduce your power bills. One option is to use a solar hot water service, where the water is heated with solar power and if you are generating your own solar power with solar panels on your roof, then you are using free electricity to heat your water.

Another option is to fix all leaks in your home fixtures, including pipes, faucets, taps and anywhere else in your water system. You also need to reduce the amount of water you are using, by installing low flow fixtures including shower heads and taps.

Low Flow Shower Heads

If you have more than one shower in your home, then change them all to low-flow heads. When shopping for a new shower head, choose one with a flow rate of less than 2.5 gallons per minute(gpm). There are two types of shower heads you can choose, the laminar-flow shower head and aerating shower head.

They cost between 10 to 25 dollars. You should expect a water saving from 25 to 60 percent, depending on your choice of showerhead and how much water you use.

Reduce Your Bills With Low Flow Fixtures

Reducing your hot water consumption and therefore your utility bill can be achieved by installing many low-flow fixtures in your home. Many people are unaware that these small devices can be so instrumental in cutting their bills. You may be surprised with the results.

Now, here is another tip to reduce you water usage. When you are looking to buy new appliances, always look for energy efficient appliances including energy efficient washers and dishwashers.

Look For The Energy Efficiency Label On Home Appliances

When purchasing home appliances, look for ways to reduce your energy bill, by reading the Energy Guide label on an appliance, before you make your final purchasing decision.

When looking to purchase a dishwasher, you should look for two types - the compact capacity and standard capacity. Compact machines are more energy efficient because they use less water, but they hold a reduced number of dishes.

Look For A Booster Heater

Before making a final purchasing decision for a dishwasher, look for one that comes with a booster heater built into the appliance. It may cost you a little extra money, but it will help to increase energy efficiency, and therefore help reduce your power costs.

Another way to minimize your water heating costs is to lower the temperature on your water heater, increasing the efficiency of your hot water system.

Little Known Recycling Facts.....

How do I recycle my garbage?
The first step you need to take is to contact your local waste management facility and find out what types of recyclables they take each week. The next step is to secure the appropriate bins that will house each of the different types of recycling materials.

Some bins are for inside your home and some are for outside. Once you have the correct storage containers it is time to sort your trash. Plastics, papers, glass, aluminum and yard trimmings will each go into separate bins and will be placed out on your curb for pick-up on the appropriate day.
