Old Magazines To Reuse And Recycle
By Genevieve Thomson
Old magazines can be left in a recycling bin, to be
collected on the curb by a recycling collection service.
Alternatively, these pre loved magazines can be donated
to worthy institutions like hospitals, retirement homes,
doctor and dental surgeries. These magazines can be
read by a wider audience, while patients are waiting
for a consultation in a hospital, a surgery or passing
the time away from the idiot box, in a retirement home.
You may want to avoid sending old magazines to landfill,
as most magazines are recyclable and some magazines
are made from recycled paper. Rather than chopping down
more trees, we should be recycling old magazines, to
create new magazines, newspapers and other paper products.
We need to change our ways of a throw away society
and think about ways we can use more than once, of what
we already have. Just like you do not throw away your
plastic and glass bottles, you send them for recycling,
the same way we keep using old magazines and finally
send them for recycling to make new magazines. The more
we reduce, reuse and recycle what we already have, the
less we are dependent on new resources.
Taking Care Of Our Planet And Our Natural Resources
Lots of people are fond of magazines, about cooking,
fashion, sports, science, celebrities or whatever. Women,
especially, tend to let magazines collect to the point
where they’re piling up in closets and the garage. So
what do you do with your “collection”?
Old magazines are usually read once, enjoyed and then
what? They sit around. Some responsible souls manage
to be organized enough to include them in the recycling
bin, while others of us just let them sit here, there
and everywhere. Maybe once a year, in spring cleaning
mode, or if you’re moving, you suddenly notice the pile
up and vow to do something to clean it up.
Extending The Life Of Old Magazines
There’s something about magazines that we equate with
books. Even old magazines seem to have intrinsic value
and it seems a shame to just throw them out. Some of
us can’t bear the thought of relegating our old magazines
to the recycling bin, to be shredded into oblivion.
Yes, this does help save a tree, but isn’t there something
to do with all those magazines before their last stop,
saving a tree? There are several ways to extend the
life of those old magazines.
Nursing homes, doctor’s offices and public assistance
waiting rooms are all good candidates to spread the
cheer. Your old magazines are new to someone else! Whether
people are waiting for an appointment or just have a
lot of time on their hands, you can brighten up someone’s
day by providing something to read.
Some Old Magazines May Have Useful Information
Perhaps that person has only a few minutes to pass
and will read only one article, but at the very least,
they’ll have a few minutes of entertainment. At best,
the old magazines you donate will contain some information
that will change that person’s life for the better.
For example, the lady in the nursing home may see an
article on natural arthritis remedies, or a recipe for
her niece’s favorite dish.
If your old magazine collection consists mainly of
food magazines, take the time to go through them and
cut out those recipes that sounded so good, but that
you never got around to making. Compile these into an
album and you’ve got new dishes to insert into your
family menus. Variety is the spice of life!
A Treasure Trove Of Pictures And Articles
A collection of National Geographic magazines easily
yields a treasure trove of pictures and articles that
make a terrific gift for children or grandchildren.
Introduce them to this world in a way their classroom
may neglect.
In the same way, sports or celebrity oriented old magazines
can be compiled into an album of highlights that kids
will love. You can give kids the inspiration to read,
when they see that there’s so much they can learn.
So before you send those old magazines to the recycling
bin, put on your thinking cap and see how you might
stretch their value to others. Then you’ll have full
value and those old magazines will be ready to be put
to their final use. Save a tree!
Before Making A Donation
Before you donate any of your old magazines to a worthy
institution, make sure they are clean and do not contain
dust, food stains and other irritations to the eventual
reader. One irritation I have noticed when reading old
magazines, is when some of the pictures and articles
are cut out. Especially when you read the first page
of an interesting story and the rest of the page is
missing.
If you contact some of these worthy institutions and
they do not need your old magazines, then the best you
can do is place them in a recycling bin. Depending on
the recycling service in your area, you may be able
to place your magazines with all your other recyclables,
or you may need to place them in a special paper recycling
bin. Many recycling collection services collect all
your recyclables in the one recycling bin, but if there
are exceptions, you may need to find out about those
exceptions.
Just remember, you need to avoid placing recyclables
like old magazines with your normal rubbish collection
and end up in landfill.

Little Known Recycling Facts.....
What are the three "R’s?"
The three "R’s" would be: Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle. Reduce is using less non-biodegradable
substances that cannot be recycled. The second is to reuse
items such as plastic containers or appliances that can be
repaired.
The third is to recycle products so that they can be
given life again as something new. The way to tie all
three together is to buy recycled materials. This creates
an incentive for more people to recycle products because
they know that they will be used in a new way later
down the road.
