Paper Bags Are A Better Option
By Genevieve Thomson
Paper bags are a better environmentally friendly option
than plastic shopping bags. Plastic bags are taking
up space in our landfills and take hundreds of years
to break down. Paper bags can be reused and recycled.
They are easy to break down. Using a paper bag is a
more environmentally friendly option than plastic bags.
Another option available these days, are bags made
of cloth or canvas. These bags are much stronger and
can be used more often and can carry a lot of the shopping
materials you buy from grocery stores.
Plastic Shopping Bags Affecting Our Environment
Chances are good that if you go to the grocery store
you will be asked if you would prefer to have plastic
or paper bags. Some places will not ask you about your
preferences, and if you want to have paper you have
to ask for them.
However, there are many places that understand some
people don’t like plastic bags, or they prefer to have
paper bags for environmental reasons. Most plastics
will not disintegrate when put into a landfill, and
those who are environmentally conscious prefer to have
paper because it can be recycled rather easily, and
will not remain in a landfill for hundreds of years.
Paper Bags Can be Used More Than Once
Even though paper bags tend to be flimsy, they can
be used more than once. I remember that my grandmother
had quite a collection of bags in her home, and they
were stuck in between her two freezers in her background
room. They were much sturdier than they are today, but
in their basic form they have remained the same.
Some people like to use paper bags simply because the
plastic ones annoy them to no end. I know that I save
a lot of my plastic bag simply because they’re
useful for other things. However, they are a pain when
it comes to storing them.
Storing Paper Bags For Later Use
You can wad them up and stick them somewhere, but once
you reach in to grab one, fifteen will follow. Paper
bags tend to take up more space, but they are far easier
to deal with. You can stack them up and slide them into
a small space to keep them for later use.
Five Or Six Fabric Bags
If you’re into environmental causes, you can go a step
beyond paper bags. Some people like to have five or
six fabric bags that they take with them to the grocery
store. Their groceries can then be brought home in these
bags instead of choosing plastic or paper bags. These
bags can be used over, and over again, and can be washed
when they become dirty.
It is a little more work to store, care for, and use
these type of fabric bags, but if you are concerned
about the environment it is definitely a way you can
cut down on both plastic and paper bags being wasted.
No matter what your preference, I would assume that
all types of bags will exist in the future. You just
have to decide what is best for you at your world.
Buying Cloth And Canvas Bags To Hold Your Shopping
Goods
So, the next time you are buying your groceries, consider
buying a number of cloth bags, so that you can use them
a number of times. You can even take them to different
stores and use them. Some stores these days, do not
offer bags at all. So take one or two cloth bags with
you when you are off to the store to buy a gift or general
shopping.
A bag is useful if you have heavy items, like a box
of nails, or a number of bottles of soda. A cloth bag
will hold these heavy items much more securely than
plastic or paper bags. If you are thinking about convenience,
then cloth bags are a better deal.
You may hear stories in the news about dolphins and
whales chocking on plastic bags. So if you do not want
to feel responsible in any way, for the death of these
great creatures, then you need to consider a better
option than plastic shopping bags.
Phasing Out Plastic Shopping Bags
Some governments around the world have begun attempts
to phase out plastic shopping bags, either banning them
all together or forcing stores to charge a fee for each
shopping bag. The fee is a small amount, but now you
may be paying for something that was once free.
As more people realise, it is a better environmentally
friendly option to switch to paper bags.

Little Known Recycling Facts.....
What are the three "R’s?"
The three "R’s" would be: Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle. Reduce is using less non-biodegradable
substances that cannot be recycled. The second is to reuse
items such as plastic containers or appliances that can be
repaired.
The third is to recycle products so that they can be
given life again as something new. The way to tie all
three together is to buy recycled materials. This creates
an incentive for more people to recycle products because
they know that they will be used in a new way later
down the road.
