Phone Book For Recycling Paper
By Genevieve Thomson
Phone book can be used to locate phone numbers of your
friends and businesses in the area. But, there are times
when you can receive too many phone books from different
businesses and phone companies and most are never used.
There is only a limited space in the family home for
something you never use.
The solution is to send the phone books you never use
for recycling. They may be last years phone book and
a new phone book has just arrived. The only problem
is, some recycling companies do not recycle phone books
all year round. My recycling company collects old phone
books two months after delivery of new phone books.
This means, ten months of the year I have a stack of
outdated phone books taking up space in my home.
A Rural Setting With A Rural Mail Delivery Service
We live in a rural area so we receive our mail through
a rural mail carrier in a mail box that is placed on
the street in front of our home. There is not a charge
to have the mail delivered to our home. If there is
a package or delivery that is too large to fit into
the mailbox the carrier will drive into the driveway
to deliver the package to the house.
If no one is home a slip is left that states there
is a package to be picked up at the local post office.
The other day I went to the mail box and had another
irritating surprise. No it was not a bill it was another
phone book. It seems that every possible company and
association is sending out telephone directories. The
phone book that I received today was compiled by the
electrical cooperative. I did not need another phone
book.
Too Many Phone Books Take Up Too Much Space
When I went to the cabinet where we keep the directories
I found that I had no room for the new phone book. We
live in the central part of our state and are close
to three different area codes. This means that each
of the surrounding towns with a different area code
sends us a small phone book. We then get a large phone
book from the telephone company that services the area.
The large directory is the simplest to use and provides
all the information in one place.
I am an environmentalist. As a result we recycle anything
and everything that we can. Unfortunately the local
recycle company will only take telephone directories
for recycling the two months after the large directory
comes out. They will recycle the smaller directories,
but only for those two months out of the year.
This means that the smaller ones that we want to dispose
of sit in a pile in the garage for up to 10 months.
I tried donating our small directories to the local
library however they did not have a need for them. I
also contacted the local school to see if they needed
additional copies so that teachers could have them at
their desks, but I was told that they were given ample
copies.
Contacting Phone Book Companies
I called each of the companies that supply us with
a phone book. I requested to have our name removed from
the mailing list to receive the directories. Two of
the companies said that they charged to have your name
taken off the mailing list. I could not believe that
I would have to pay so that I would not receive a free
publication.
Each company has said that I can return the directory
to the office. Now instead of having a pile of directories
in the garage, I have them in the trunk of my car. When
I am in the area of one of the companies that has sent
out the phone book, I drop it off in their office area.
Looking For Solutions To My Recycling Problem
I am also looking to find out the cost of cancellation
of delivery and my costs in delivering the books back
to the company office. I am also considering contacting
my local congressman to find out if there is any other
way I can stop all these phone books taking up space
in my home.
I don't mind receiving the main phone book from the
phone company, but it is all these little phone books
that I never use, taking up space and the recycling
company is taking too long to collect them. I am considering
talking to friends and asking if I can give them my
phone books so that their recycling company could collect
the phone books, instead of sitting in my garage for
my recycling collection service to pick up the books.
Using Another Recycling Company
One of my friends has told me that she puts all her
newspapers, cartons, phone books and other paper products,
every time the recycling company comes around to collect
her recyclables. It seems the recycling company collecting
in her area does not care what type of paper recyclables
you place in the recycling bin, as long as it contains
paper.
I think I have found my solution. Rather than driving
all the way to the big smoke to deliver the phone books
back to the provider, I will give them all to my friend
to leave them out on the curb with all her paper recyclables.
I may even consider changing recycling companies. Now
there is an idea!

Little Known Recycling Facts.....
Can everything be recycled?
Unfortunately not everything can
be recycled but a huge majority can be. Too bad many
people are not electing to recycle anything at all.
Batteries can be given new life,
plastics can be made into other products and even those
old newspapers and magazines can be made into new reading
materials. You cannot recycle old diapers but there
are ways that even that can be cut down by using reusable
cloth diapers.
