Recycling Glass Reduces Environmental Impact
By Genevieve Thomson
Recycling glass is one of the more popular methods
to reduce the need for more landfills. Almost all household
waste can be recycled, as long there are recycling
companies.
Most of the metals, glass, green waste, paper and other
household waste can be collected from your home, by
recycling companies in your area. If there are no collection
services for a specific material, you may arrange to
take some of your recyclable materials to a recycling
plant.
Recycling Collection Depot
For example, aluminum cans can be taken to a recyclables
collection depot and then sent to a recycling plant.
You may talk to your neighbors about making a collection
in the area and take all your aluminum cans from your
neighborhood to the local collection depot.
If you are in a lucky neighborhood, where there are
a number of recycling collection services in your area,
then all you need is to confirm the type of recyclable
products each company collects. One company may specialize
in recycling glass bottles, so you can place all your
glass bottles for collection on the day.
Making a review of your options, taking part in recycling
most of your household waste, will help to limit the
need for new landfills and reuse products we already
have, rather than looking for more resources to create
more products.
Little Things You Can Do To Make A Difference
Now that it appears global warming is a real issue
with has real long term effects on our world, more people
are stepping up and doing what little things they can
to make a difference. If each person or family makes
just one small change, that adds up to a huge impact
on what we are doing to our planet.
One thing that many have done for a long time is something
that others are quickly picking up on is recycling glass.
Recycling glass is easy, and is always a good idea.
Preparing Your Glass For Recycling
When you set things out for recycling glass, there
are a few things you should do to help speed the process
and to be sure your glass items are indeed recycled.
One of the first things that you should do it to soak
each glass item that has a paper label on it. You want
to rid the glass of all paper, and the glue if you can.
This means the ones recycling glass do not have to
take the time to do this. In some cases, those glass
items are put aside because there just is not the time
or the manpower to get them ready to go through the
system.
Cleaning Your Glass Bottles
Any items for glass recycling should also be cleaned
thoroughly. While you are soaking them to remove paper
and glue, you should also give the inside a good scrub
with a brush to be sure there are no food particles
inside, and so that any dried liquid in the bottom is
removed.
This also saves time when recycling glass, though most
will be cleaned before they go through the process.
This is something that many skip, and that may not be
a big deal, but it is always a good thing to do before
you set your glass out for recycling.
Find Out From The Recycling Company Requirements For
Glass Recycling
There are many types of glass that can be recycled,
but there are a few exceptions. Those exceptions change
all of the time, as ways to recycle glass of all types
are being found and used. However, you should make sure
you know what you can send and what can not be used.
You can find this information online, or you can ask
your local recycling company.
They probably have literature about what they can accept
for glass recycling, and also what they can take for
paper and plastics as well. If you are recycling glass,
you may as well do the rest too.
Recycle Bins Of Collections Of Recyclable Materials
You may receive brochures in the mail box telling you
what can be recycled by the recycling company. You may
even allocate different bins for different types of
recycling. You may have one bin for green waste, like
leaves and grass clippings, another bin for glass and
another bin for paper and plastics.
Anything that cannot be recycled, then you may have
to place it in the normal garbage collection, but you
will find that as a lot of your disposable waste can
be recycled, your garbage collection of unrecyclable
materials has been reduced to a very low level.
Managing your household waste, by recycling, will help
reduce the need for more landfills.

Little Known Recycling Facts.....
What are the three "R’s?"
The three "R’s" would be: Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle. Reduce is using less non-biodegradable
substances that cannot be recycled. The second is to reuse
items such as plastic containers or appliances that can be
repaired.
The third is to recycle products so that they can be
given life again as something new. The way to tie all
three together is to buy recycled materials. This creates
an incentive for more people to recycle products because
they know that they will be used in a new way later
down the road.
