RO Water Filtration To Remove Large Particles And Minerals

By James J Dixon

At the time when RO water filtration was first converted for household use, they became an almost instant hit. Since no one knew about all the drawbacks, it was advertised as the one sure way to achieve pure water for drinking.

However, the popularity of RO systems has declined considerably in the past thirty years. RO water treatment is simply not that good when compared to other purification systems on the market today. We simply cannot afford to use reverse osmosis filtration when considering the implications from an environmental as well as global stand-point.

How do reverse osmosis water filter systems work and what does it do to water? It is used to remove large particles of dirt and minerals from water sources. RO can remove sand, minerals and stones as well as salt.

Some Contaminants Have No Odor Or Taste

For the most part, all groundwater contains some form of contaminants that are unhealthy for humans to ingest. What makes it difficult to grasp is that some of the contaminants cannot be smelled or tasted.

Now that you know what reverse osmosis filters do, let’s look at what these filters do not do. On the flip side, reverse osmosis has a laundry list of what it does not do.

RO Should Never Be The Only Step In Filtration

It does not remove chemicals or disinfect water. Although RO may be one step in a complete process, it should never be the only step if drinking water is to be made safe for human consumption.

Although some companies sell RO water filtration systems for use in the home, they are very expensive and do not provide a satisfactory amount of contaminant filtering.

Unnecessary For Most Homes

The only homes that truly need RO water filtration are those whose only water option is sea water. So this does supply some demand for reverse osmosis devices, but for most people, they are truly unnecessary.

What the RO water filter systems do not do is remove chlorine. Generally, chlorine removal is pretty much the biggest reason why most of us need water filtration in the first place.

Cannot Block Anything Lighter Than Water

This is because RO filters cannot block anything that is lighter than water. This includes a lot of pesticides and herbicides; they are lighter than water and therefore are left behind by reverse osmosis filtration.

Another problem with reverse osmosis filtration is waster water. In this day and age of water being in short supply, reverse osmosis filtering wastes from three to five gallons of water for every one gallon of water that is cleaned. That is a dismal and inefficient record for sure.

May End Up With Unhealthy Water

In a nutshell, if we use the reverse osmosis filtration at home to filter our water, then we end up with unhealthy water that is de-mineralized as well as contaminated with chlorine, herbicides and pesticides, all while tasting flat.

The truth of the matter is that RO water filtration devices do what they are supposed to do, which is remove minerals. RO was never meant to be an all around water filtration device.

The water filtered through RO is good for printing, film-making and when there is no alternative to sea water. Other than those applications, it is not good for human consumption.

Little Known Water Filtration Facts.....

Modern conveniences are great. It was a big deal twenty years ago to be able to buy bottled water. Many older generations were appalled at the thought though. Who would pay for a bottle of water when it was free from the tap?

But that was before people began to worry about the contaminants in their water such as lead and zinc. Things that modern water filtration systems now remove. People truly wanted to be drinking healthier water and so these filtration systems became popular as the reality of what plastic does to landfills sank in.
