Phasing Out Plastic Shopping Bags
By Genevieve Thomson
Shopping bags are being phased out in many shopping
areas. In many shops, they are either charging for plastic
bags, where they were once free, or offer free or low
cost canvas bags. These cloth bags can be reused and
the material can be recycled and even be washed in your
washing machine.
You may see the mountains of plastic shopping bags,
the next time you visit your local landfill. Plastic
takes a long time to break down and can be a health
hazard. Reusable cloth shopping bags are recyclable
and can be used many times. Paper shopping bags can
also be used a number of times, but they do not last
as long as cloth or canvas shopping bags.
If you are still using plastic shopping bags, it may
be time to review your options and start using canvas
shopping bags.
Plastic Shopping Bags Affecting Our Environment
When I was a kid, you never heard someone ask if you
wanted paper or plastic when you got your groceries.
These were only paper, at least for a while. Plastic
soon came about though, and many opted to use them,
not thinking about what it might mean to the environment.
Generally, only those that had a specific use for paper
bags would ask for them, and everyone else would get
plastic shopping bags. Today, things are a bit different,
and many choose paper rather than plastic for environmental
reasons, but that may not be the best option out there.
Shopping Bags Made With Canvas And Other Natural Materials
Some shopping bags are now made of canvas or other
natural materials, and they are 100% recyclable. Not
only that, you can use them over and over again without
having to throw anything away, and you are not using
any plastic or paper shopping bags.
You can even throw many of these in the washing machine
if they get dirty or if your groceries leak while you
are taking them home. The only problem some have with
these is that it can be hard to remember them at first.
After using them for a while you will remember, but
at first, be prepared to forget them at least a few
times.
Most Are Made Of Paper With A Nifty Handle
When you think about shopping bags you get from stores
in the mall, for example, you may find that these are
unchanged for the most part. They are generally made
of paper and have a nifty handle on them.
However, you can still take your reusable bags with
you when you go there, and they will have no problem
letting you use them. Some of them may soon enough come
up with their own reusable shopping bags that are more
in line with their image. If you look online, you can
probably find some bags that you can use for this purpose
that look much different than the ones you get for the
grocery store.
A Great Giveaway For Your Business
If you are looking for a great giveaway for your business,
or perhaps as a favor for an event, you can see if you
can find some of these shopping bags to have printed
up with your company logo or your event. You can even
sell them in your store for a low price.
They can be very great for promotional purposes, as
those that use them will carry them around in crowds.
It will also give your business a great reputation for
being careful about what you put out there when selling
your goods. A little thing like shopping bags can make
a huge difference in anyone’s reputation.
Phasing Out Of Plastic Shopping Bags
If you go to the large chain supermarkets, you can
see they are phasing out plastic shopping bags and some
are even charging for plastic shopping bags. They are
now offering canvas shopping bags to shoppers at a relatively
low price. These shopping bags are reusable, so once
you buy a number of them, you take them with you every
time you go shopping.
You can also use them in many stores, when you purchase
other items. There are some stores that do not offer
free shopping bags at all. They have made a responsible
decision and have left the customer decide if they wish
to buy the recyclable canvas bags in the store or not
to use shopping bags at all.
These days, people are becoming more environmentally
aware, where reducing, recycling and reusing most of
our household products helps you to play your part in
saving our fragile environment. It may be time, to ban
plastic shopping bags altogether.

Little Known Recycling Facts.....
What are the three "R’s?"
The three "R’s" would be: Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle. Reduce is using less non-biodegradable
substances that cannot be recycled. The second is to reuse
items such as plastic containers or appliances that can be
repaired.
The third is to recycle products so that they can be
given life again as something new. The way to tie all
three together is to buy recycled materials. This creates
an incentive for more people to recycle products because
they know that they will be used in a new way later
down the road.
