Whale Watching Solar Power Energy Generation Guide

Whale Watching With Cameras And Binoculars

By Genevieve Thomson

When contemplating a whale watching adventure and browsing a tour operator’s website, you might get excited looking at all the up close and personal encounters people have had with these giant mammals.

However, there is no guarantee you’ll be so lucky. Some excursions may only witness a spout of water, a fin or a tail here and there. You might see one whale or you might encounter a whole pod.

You might just see humpbacks on any given day or the bay may be brimming with them, as well as with minkes, rights and finbacks. All whale and dolphin cruises are not created equal, so if at first you don’t succeed, try again!

Spotting Whales In America

Deciding where you would like to go, to catch a glimpse of these magnificent animals is an enormous task since they move freely around the world. However, there are a number of whale spotting destinations right in America.

Whale watching in California, from San Francisco and Monterey Bay down to San Diego and Baja is very popular because pods of gray, blue and humpback whales migrate from the north down to warmer waters for the winter.

Many Types Of Whales In Boston

Hawaii is another popular American hangout for these species as well. Boston whale watching tours in Stellwagen’s Bank offer guaranteed sightings of humpbacks, grays, blues, pilots or minkes.

If you’ve always wanted to see killer whales in person, then your best bet is Seattle, British Columbia or Alaska whale watching tours.

Get Ready For A Wild Sea Adventure

Once you’ve chosen a location for your whale watching expedition, you’ll have to decide which type of trip you’d like to take. Most trips fall under the "whale watching cruise" category, which requires you to pop a couple seasickness pills, put on your rubber-soled shoes and layer up your clothes for a wild sea adventure.

Early in the morning, you’ll board a whale watching boat, where you’ll have a better opportunity to see flukes and fins, not to mention the occasional acrobatics. Some boat trips last between two and four hours, while other vacation cruise lines may take passengers out for several days.

Hiking Along The Coastline With Cameras And Binoculars

In select locations, you may choose a land-based trip, where participants hike along the coastline wearing their hiking boots, and have cameras and binoculars to spot harbor whales lunching in the canyons or canals.

These trips are ideal for people who feel nervous about being so close to whales, who have limited time for viewing, or who might be prone to seasickness.

Wear More Than Adequate Clothing For Ocean Travel

Be sure you’re adequately prepared if you’re taking one of the more adventurous ocean whale watching excursions. Far too often, travelers misjudge the weather and show up wearing sandals, shorts and t-shirts.

Instead, you should put on rubber-soled sneakers, jeans, a t-shirt, a sweater, a raincoat, a hat and sunglasses. Sometimes gloves or sunscreen may be necessary. Even if it feels warm on the shore, remember that the temperature can drop up to 20 degrees out on breezy whale watching boats.

Tips To Avoid Seasickness

An hour before your departure, be sure you eat a solid breakfast packed with carbohydrates, take your seasickness medication and pack enough water to keep you hydrated. These things will all cut down on the possibility that you will be seasick.

By coming prepared, you’ll keep your mind on the magical experience of spotting a whale, rather than feeling needlessly uncomfortable.
