What Is Global Warming?
By John M Saragunter
Global warming is a reality. We can no longer bury
our heads in the sand. Our actions have a direct effect
upon the Earth. We know that oil spills are horrible
and that toxic chemicals dumped into landfills will
scar the environment tremendously. Yet there is ongoing
debate as to how the increase in the world’s temperature
has come about and more importantly: what steps do we
need to take in order to stop the process.
What are greenhouse gas emissions?
Greenhouse gas emissions can be water vapor, carbon
dioxide or even be methane gas. There are naturally
occurring greenhouse emissions that do not pollute the
environment and have been here for millions of years.
The dangerous levels of greenhouse gases come from burning
fossil fuels. These fuels produce carbon dioxide in
dangerous levels.
During the Industrial Age, the world discovered the
benefits of using fossil fuels for energy purposes.
At the time the effects of emissions were not considered.
It has been in recent years that climatic changes have
began occurring and has been linked to rising carbon
dioxide gases.
What are the effects of global warming?
It is hard to imagine the world being changed dramatically
simply due to an increase in a few temperature degrees.
In the Arctic Circle, the effects of increased temperature
have not gone unnoticed. The ice is developing later
and later due to the rising ocean temperature. Polar
bears rely on the ice to help them hunt and stay alive.
We can no longer ignore that we have an impact on the
environment. All actions have consequence, be it good
or bad. As more carbon dioxide is released into the
air, temperatures will continue to rise and the environment
will suffer.
What does the ozone layer have to do with global warming?
The ozone layer protects the Earth from the Sun’s harsh
rays. It filters ultraviolet particles and provides
as an insulator. You can think of it in terms of a big
blanket. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse emissions
begin accumulating in the atmosphere, trapping heat
in rather than letting it out.
Are there regulations in place to prevent industries
from polluting the environment?
There are regulations in place for countries who are
members of the United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change and who have signed the Kyoto Protocol
amendment. The countries agree that they will limit
the amount of greenhouse gas emissions they produce
each year. Some countries, due to being underdeveloped,
do not have a cap on the amount of greenhouse gases
whereas the larger countries do.
What can I do to help stop global warming?
There are some very simple methods for doing your part
to help reduce the global warming effect and greenhouse
gases. The first is to limit the amount of fossil fuels
you use. This means gas, coal and energy source that
is unable to replenish itself. Try switching to a hybrid
vehicle or car pooling more.
