Wind Energy Technologies With More Improvements

For a long time, the main source for renewable energy
seemed to be solar panels and little else. But in recent
years, wind energy has taken flight, if you’ll pardon
the pun, in a major way.
These days, if you haven’t seen a big wind farm somewhere
nearby, you’ll certainly have seen pictures of the tall,
majestic wind turbines towering row-upon-row in a field
or standing out of the sea.
This renewable power source has grown exponentially
as an area of research, and as the technology develops,
it’s being applied on both a very large scale, such
as the wind farms, and on smaller scales as well.
Smaller Turbines For Office Buildings Or A Home
It took a while to bring wind energy down to earth.
Wind turbines were generators that mainly handled or
supplemented power needs for entire energy grids. The
turbines themselves were huge, and their main use was
in wind farms capable of generating enough power for
entire neighborhoods or even cities.
But the technology has been refined, and there are
now small turbines capable of supplying renewable power
to single office buildings or, on an even smaller scale,
to single homes. A couple of turbines on the roof of
a building or a small one in a back yard are not uncommon
sights now.
Low Frequency Noise Affecting Some People
Many voices are urging a degree of caution, however,
in the rush to embrace wind energy. Apart from some
worry about how migrating birds are affected by wind
turbines in their flight paths, most concerns have to
do with the health of people living in close proximity
to the turbines.
Even if these machines are a great source of sustainable
energy, their low-frequency noise and vibrations appear
to affect the inner ear of some people, creating dizziness,
headaches, and even mood and sleep disorders. Whether
the effects would be as drastic on the smaller scale
of home turbines is something that isn’t yet known.
Ongoing Improvements Needed For Current Technologies
Wind power will remain one of the primary sustainable
energy sources because the winds of earth are not going
to stop blowing. It would be foolish not to take advantage
of such readily available wind energy.
However, it would also be foolish just to assume that
the current technologies for harnessing this power don’t
need some refining and study. They should not be abandoned,
but in making them safer, technologists will be helping
the earth and its inhabitants to be much healthier.
